When most people hear 'chiropractic', they immediately think of the 'spine' and chiropractors are mainly known to help with back pain, neck pain or headache. While this is true that chiropractic care is known to be effective for spinal related problems, that's only half story. In this blog, we are going to explore how people can benefit the chiropractic care from sporting related or extremity injuries (such as ankle sprain, runner's knee, rotator cuff injuries or Dequervain tenosynovitis). If you have been ignoring stubborn shoulder pain, a clicking knee or old ankle sprain that just does not function after an injury, this post will guide you how chiropractic care is actually a great place to start your recovery.

Can Chiropractor Help With Sporting or Extremity Injuries?

The answer is 'absolutely yes'. Whether you are professional athlete, a weekend warrior or tradie dealing with repetitive physical demands of the job, our chiropractors in Concord can offer non-invasive and surgery free treatment that help you to go back to your work or sporting field quickly.

Can I Manage My Injury Myself?

While some minor injuries may heal up after few days, it is still encouraged to visit chiropractors to be properly assessed. Ignoring an injury can lead to chronic issue and affecting your daily activities and sporting performance over long-term. Also, many sporting injuries are associated with trauma, therefore, proper examinations are essential to avoid complications.

There are few things you can do to self manage when you injure:

  • Rest Straight After the Injury:

Avoid excessive weight bearing for first 24-72 hours of injury to avoid further irritation or damage of ligaments or tendons

  • Resume Normal Activity:

Try to resume normal activities and weight bearing to keep the joint mobility and muscle coordination. Keep moving the injured joint within pain-free range (with slight discomfort is fine too) to stimulate healing response

  • Ice Pack:

Applying ice pack 15-20 minutes every hour for 2-3 hours to reduce acute inflammatory response

Ankle k-taping by chiropractor Coco on ankle ligament sprain patient
Ankle taping helps to support surrounding ligaments and muscles as well as proprioception for injury prevention.

Kinesio taping (K-tape) is good for injury recovery as well as prevention. Taping can support surrounding ligaments, tendons and muscles and provide proprioceptive support for injury prevention.

Proprioception is body's ability to recognise its own position and movements. It provides information about location of your body part during movement by allowing your brain to know the position of your body without relying on visual input alone.

Therefore, better proprioceptive feedback to the brain means that your body will better recognise what movement you are performing, allowing to have better posture during walking, running, tackling and etc.

Research also have shown that spinal and extremity joint adjustments improves proprioception, improve range of motion (mobility and flexibility) and reduction of pain level.

Do I Need Scan Before Treatment?

Scan, such as x-ray or MRI can be useful for some extremity injuries, especially when pain and discomfort are related to acute trauma. Your chiropractor will perform detailed examinations during consultation first and discuss with you to determine if it's appropriate to take scan (to further investigate).
