Dry needling treatment during chiropractic session

Muscle tightness and discomfort can make everyday activities uncomfortable, from working at a desk to daily exercises. Sometimes these muscle tightness or stiffness make it hard to even turn your head to check your side mirror while driving.

If you have been dealing with stubborn muscles that does not simply go away with massage, stretching or foam rolling, you may have come across and considered 'dry needling' treatment.

At Back and Beyond Chiropractic in Concord, we offer dry needling as one of our treatment options to help relieve pain and discomfort and promote healing.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling involves utilising fine, sterile, single-use acupuncture needles into tight & stiff muscles. It is commonly used to address sensitive areas sometimes described as myofascial trigger points or simply "muscle knots".

What Is a Myofascial Trigger Point?

Myofascial Trigger Point or sometimes referred to as "muscle knot" is a sensitive and hyper-irritable spot within a taut band of muscle. It can feel tender when applying pressure and may cause pain locally or travels to another area, known as "referred pain". Trigger points may also be associated with stiffness and discomfort during movement.

These "muscle knots" can be developed from a variety of reasons

  • Strenuous exercise or repetitive activity

Intense exercise, sudden increases in training or repetitive movements can place additional demands on muscles.

  • Insufficient Recovery

Repeated muscle use during work or exercise without adequate recovery may contribute to ongoing fatigue and discomfort.

  • Sustained Positions

Holding the same positions for extended periods without proper rest can place a sustained load on certain muscles, particularly around the neck and shoulders.

  • Prolonged sitting

Prolonged sitting in front of desk or driving for long period may contribute to stiffness and discomfort.

The term 'dry' means that no medication or fluid is injected, and it aims to help manage muscular pain and discomfort.

How Can Dry Needling Help?

Research suggests that there are many different physiological and mechanical ways to improve muscular tension and recovery.

  • Improve Blood Supply and local circulation

Some studies suggest that needling can increase local blood flow which can promote healing process.

  • Reduce muscular tension

It may help to break down the knot when a fine needles inserted on targeted muscles. This is similar when pressure applied during massage session to relax muscles but dry needling utilises fine acupuncture needle instead.

  • Modulating Pain Signals

Needling stimulates sensory nerves and may influence how the nervous system processes pain, helping reduce sensitivity in the treated area.

Is Dry Needling Suitable for Everyone?

While dry needling treatment is suitable for most of people, it may not be suitable options if you have certain medical conditions or currently on medications such as blood thinner. Our chiropractors in Concord will go though a thorough health history, to ensure dry needling treatment is appropriate option for you.
