What is Disc Injury? What is it and What Causes it?
Updated: 5 days ago

Living with back pain can be quite challenging with everyday activities including sitting at work, driving, putting on your shoes of lifting your child. A disc injury is one of the common possible cause, particularly when pain travels into an arm or leg.
The Intervertebral Disc
Disc is a cushion-like gel structure located between two vertebrae (spine bones). It functions as the spine’s primary shock absorber, allowing for the complex movements we perform every day.
Structurally, the disc is composed primarily of water and collagen fibres (collagen fibre 1 and 2), organised into two distinct layers:
1. Annulus Fibrosus (The Outer Protective Ring)
Consists of 12-15 layers of tough collagen fibres arranged in a specialised crisscross pattern. This design provides immense structural strength, acting like a radial tire to contain the inner core and manage spinal pressure
2. Nucleus Pulposus (The Inner Core)
This is the “gel-like” centre of the disc. It is highly hydrated and resilient, and its main function is to distribute weight evenly across the vertebral segment and absorb the impact of gravity and movement.

Why Do Disc Injuries Occur?
The disc is a robust structure but has specific mechanical vulnerability. Biomechanically, the disc is most vulnerable during combined flexion (bending forward) and rotation (twisting). Excessive loading on disc without proper support from surrounding muscles can cause damage to disc and causes pain. That’s why many people experience sharp sudden pain in the lower back while lifting or bending over to put the shoelace on.
Common causes of injury
While there can be a variety of causes for back pain and disc injury, most common causes include:
Acute Trauma: Sudden force such as motor vehicle accident, a fall, or heavy lifting with poor technique can put the excessive load on disc to damage.
Repetitive micro-trauma: A small tear or injury in the outer layers (Annulus fibrosus). While small, these can be highly painful due to the rich nerve innervation in the outer ring.
Disc Protrusion (Bulging Disc): When the inner gel pushes against the weakened outer ring, causing it to “bulge” into spinal canal.
Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD): A gradual process where the disc loses its water content and height, reducing its ability to absorb shock and often leading to stiffness and pain.

Common Symptoms of Disc Injuries
While some disc injuries can be asymptomatic, common symptoms associated with disc injuries can include
Pain (often sharp and quite severe)
Difficulty bending down
Pain travelling into the buttock, leg, or foot (usually one side)
Pain travelling from the neck into arm and fingers (usually one side)
Tingling, numbness or muscle weakness in the arm or leg
These symptoms can have other causes, so proper assessment is critical for successful management of your back pain.
Seek emergency medical care immediately if you develop loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or both legs or rapidly worsening weakness of leg muscles as it can indicate serious nerve compression. Back pain with fever, unexplained weight loss also need prompt medical assessment.
How Can Chiropractic Care Help
Chiropractic care often help manage lower back pain associated with disc problems through a combination of appropriate hands-on treatment, rehabilitation exercises and advice on modifications of daily activities.
At Back and Beyond Chiropractic, our chiropractors go through a thorough assessment to identify your cause of disc injury and provide comprehensive solution to improve (visit our page 'Your First Visit' to learn what happens during the first initial chiropractic consultation):
Restore Segmental Mobility: Adjustments help "unstick" joints, allowing for better nutrient exchange within the disc.
Reduce Neural Pressure: By improving spinal alignment through the specific chiropractic adjustment, we aim to reduce the mechanical irritation on the nerves associated with the injury.
Manage Inflammation: Restoring proper mechanics helps the body naturally move through the inflammatory phase of healing.

The Formula for Lasting Results
Our concord clinic just do not provide treatment for your back pain. We build a partnership with you to provide long-lasting solution for management of your lower back pain so that you can simply enjoy your life without pain and aches.

(Check out 'how we treat' and 'conditions we treat' page)
2. Exercise (Active Rehabilitation): Our chiropractors go through specific and tailored rehabilitation exercise plans to stabilise and strengthen your back
to improve the "armour" around your spine, protecting the disc from future stress.
3. Habits (Lifestyle Modification): Advice on what you should and should avoid. Our chiropractors offer advice what activities can be beneficial (e.g. Walking and ergonomic advice) and what you should avoid (e.g. change in sitting posture) to promote healing.
