Jaw & TMJ Dysfunction

Jaw Pain, Clicking or Difficulty Moving Your Jaw?

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your jawbone to your skull and allow you to open, close and move your jaw. When these joints or the surrounding muscles are not functioning properly, you may experience jaw pain, clicking, stiffness or difficulty moving your jaw.

TMJ dysfunction can develop for a number of reasons, including jaw clenching, teeth grinding, stress, injury and changes in jaw or neck movement. Symptoms can vary from person to person, which is why understanding the underlying factors is an important part of managing jaw pain.

Common symptoms of Jaw Pain and TMJ Dysfunction

TMJ dysfunction can cause a range of symptoms, including:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness

  • Clicking or popping in the jaw

  • Jaw stiffness or restricted movement

  • Difficulty opening or closing the mouth

  • Jaw locking

  • Pain around the face or temples

  • Headaches

  • Ear discomfort or pressure

  • Neck and shoulder tension

What Causes Jaw Pain and TMJ dysfunction?

Jaw symptoms can be influenced by several factors. Common contributors may include:

  • Teeth grinding or jaw clenching

  • Stress and muscle tension

  • Jaw or facial injury

  • Changes in jaw movement

  • Muscle tension around the jaw and neck

  • Neck and upper spinal movement

  • Prolonged postural habits

Because the jaw, neck and upper spine work together, changes in one area may influence movement and muscle function in another.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help with Jaw Pain and TMJ Dysfunction?

At Back and Beyond Chiropractic Concord, we look beyond the jaw itself. We assess the movement of the jaw alongside the neck, upper spine and surrounding muscles to identify factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Depending on your individual presentation, chiropractic care may include gentle joint techniques, soft tissue therapy, exercises and advice on jaw and neck movement.

Our goal is to understand what may be contributing to your jaw symptoms and develop an approach that is appropriate for your individual needs.
